Sussex Tree Arborist Corner

Tree pruning is important for aesthetic reasons and to encourage the growth of strong, healthy trees. When is the best time to trim you may ask? As a general rule, spring thru early summer is the best time to work on your trees, though this varies depending on the type of tree you are dealing with. Before performing any tree pruning it is a good idea to talk to our certified arborists to ensure the proper care for the trees on your property. Unnecessary pruning can stress trees and shrubs during an already stressful time of the year. Improper pruning can also reduce or eliminate the beautiful flowers that should have decorated the plant in the spring, and can ruin the tree or shrub’s natural form.

When is pruning necessary? There are some very good reasons to prune, and they generally fall into one of these categories:

1. Canopy cleaning- Whether a tree or shrub, as a plant gets older some of the branches die. Removal of these branches improves the appearance of the plant and, in the case of trees, makes it safer to walk under them.
2. Flower and/or fruit production- As some shrubs get older, they become less “flower productive.” Stimulating new stems (canes) usually stimulates better flower/fruit production.
